Create a Rainforest Refuge

http://www.msnbc.com/modules/rainforestSimulation/main.asp

Description

In this resource, students create development strategies for sustainable growth with both economic and environmental interests in mind. Students rollover different regions of Mexico to get information. As they select options to build or conserve, students see the impact on profits and species. Some of the different factors they must consider include: species loss, hectares, profitability, eco-tourism, political legislation, land trust, and the possibility of political protests.

Using the Resource

This flash-based activity provides a simulated environment in which students can practice real-world urban planning decision-making skills. Students see how pro-conservation choices will slow down deforestation, but also slow down profits. Students see the results of their choices after ten years. Students can do research on real rainforests and then apply their knowledge to choices they make in the simulation. The content of this activity is best suited for grade 9-12 students.
