Asthma and Allergies: The Science Inside
http://healthlit.org/scienceInside/documents/AsthmaAllergybook.pdf

Description
Part of The Science Inside series which presents science information in an easy-to-read format, this booklet explains the basics of these respiratory conditions, their relationship to each other, prevention, treatments, and more. It also addresses current biomedical research on these disorders, as well as the role that volunteers play in clinical trials on therapies and new treatments for these conditions. Separate chapters are provided on each condition, which carefully explain such topics as what is healthy breathing, the symptoms and causes of each condition, as well as the societal impacts of asthma and allergies. Included in the appendices are a sample asthma action plan and questions to ask your physician about allergies and asthma. Additional resources, a bibliography, and a glossary are also included.

Using the Resource
All of the booklets in The Science Inside series can be used to help students build important health literacy skills, such as understanding important preventative health measures; understanding basic health information with a goal towards utilizing it to make appropriate health decisions; and understanding national and international public health and safety issues. The two sections of the booklet can be used separately to study either asthma or allergies. Also, individual sections within the booklet might be useful when studying such topics as healthy breathing and lung function and the role of the immune system in the human body.
