Solar System Exploration

http://solarsystem.nasa.gov

Target Audience
Grades -   6-8   9-12

This website is an extensive doorway to information about our solar system. It has goals, schedules, and plans for future exploration as well as well documented chronologies and histories of past missions and discoveries. At a mouse click, one can obtain detailed information about any body in the solar system. The site is to be commended for showing past missions and the associated accomplishments. Too often, in the thrust to push new plans forward, space scientists and engineers forget what has come before. Here the evolution of knowledge about each planet or moon can be seen in historical timelines. To some extent governmentese is evident with the latest buzzwords, e.g., enterprise, integrated launch assessment, road map. People who contribute to space science are highlighted, but those chosen often represent present or former NASA moguls, or a politically correct mix from the cadre of space workers. While education at the teacher and student level is a facet of this website, the site is more truly a reference for researchers, the public, as well as students or educators. Overall, this website does a very good job of documenting and promoting all aspects of solar system exploration.
