Inside the Human Body: The Respiratory System

Grades - K-2 3-5 6-8 9-12

This site, developed by the Canadian Lung Association, is an excellent resource for teachers and students in grades 1 through 12. The level of the material, the content, and the interactive activities are different in each section and appropriate for the target age group. The material for the youngest group uses a story book, a coloring book, and worksheets, and provides basic material on the lungs and their function. The two older groups are introduced to air pollution, lung health and wellness, the respiratory system, and tobacco. The text is accurate, up-to-date and sufficiently detailed for basic learning. The graphics enhance the text. A large number of interactive activities are available to reinforce learning and to introduce new content. These include puzzles, word games, matching exercises, and tests of knowledge. The site also covers basic information about tuberculosis, including drug resistance, asthma, and the consequences of tobacco use. A strong anti-smoking message is presented at all levels. The material for educators uses the same categories as that for the older children. There is also some supplementary factual material and a large number of worksheets in pdf format that can be printed. The site is well designed and easy to use, although there are times when one must resort to the back key. Many of the activities require downloading a Java plug-in.
