Polar Science Station

Freeze! Polar Science Station is one-stop shopping for Arctic and Antarctic information and resources. Cold, hard facts about glaciers and icebergs, and hot news of animal survival in the rugged climate of the arctic are samples of the shivering tales found throughout the site. Like an iceberg, the site is deceptively simple on the surface, hiding a great wealth of teaching ideas, scientific explorations, and current events news just below the surface. Chill out over selected links to relevant news from The Why Files (Why Fish Don't Freeze?), from Public Television's NOVA Series (Shackleton's Antarctic Odyssey), or from the National Science Foundation's public outreach (Ozone Hole Research), all of which are written in a lively and engaging fashion. Mine authentic data from research expeditions to the north slope of Alaska's Toolik Lake. Dress a scientist for survival in the extreme polar climate. Conduct a blubber experiment testing its thermal insulating properties. And when the virtual explorer of Polar Science Station melts through the many layers of intrigue, a carefully selected list of related sites cleaves off to other icy pursuits: Global Warming and the Polar Caps, Archeology of Arctic North America, a Virtual Museum of Polar Exploration, and more.
