Journey North

Target Audience
Grades -   K-2   3-5   6-8

Journey North, funded by Annenberg/CPB, is a long-established, free online site supported by a grant from the Annenberg Foundation to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding comes from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. At Journey North, students, teachers, and adults will find a huge, skill-oriented reservoir of information and lessons on global wildlife migration and seasonal change. Although the site is large and a bit cumbersome, much effort is made to connect with researchers who are tracking animal migrations north and south. Live interactive programming is scheduled from early February until June 1. Site visitors will find enthusiastic, but quite objective regular news updates, copious tracking reports (for example, bald eagles or monarch butterflies) from learner groups in schools mostly in North America, equally plentiful information on botany projects (emerging plants like tulips), lesson plans, challenging questions, etc. Students keep a very vigorous discussion going on the site; teachers have their own discussion space, but don't seem to use it as much. Solid lessons in math and science (like charting latitude/longitude against distance traveled) add value as an educational tool. A Journey North printed manual can be ordered for a moderate price.
