Illinois Birds

http://dnr.state.il.us/education/CLASSRM/birds/index.htm

Target Audience
Grades -   3-5   6-8

Illinois Birds is a valuable resource for hobbyists and ornithologists alike, with a wealth of information about the birds that visit or inhabit the state of Illinois. Two links from the main page are particularly helpful: Educational Materials and INHS Bird Facts. Educational Materials include 12 lessons keyed to state educational standards. Additionally, the site provides a reading list, field trip site suggestions, games from Project Wild, and so on. The only downside to the lesson plans is that they mostly are modeling experiences—of nests, of bird beaks, etc. Little investigative opportunity is provided to students. The INHS Bird Facts link (Illinois Natural History Survey) is for the serious inquirer. It provides an atlas of 79 species inhabiting the state, complete with species profile, distribution, management practices, and much more. Educators, researchers, students, professionals, bonded by a love for birds all have something to gain from this website!

**Review Updated: 2/4/09
The 12 lessons are still available on this site, along with the list of the 79 species inhabiting Illinois. There is now also an extensive list of bird species by class. This list includes information on the species level of endangerment and whether it is a native species or introduced.
