S.O.S. MATHematics
The S.O.S. MATHematics site is sponsored by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso. This site presents on-line tutorials on some of the important concepts from pre-college and college math courses. The courses include algebra, trigonometry, calculus, complex variables, matrix algebra, and differential equations. Each course page begins with a syllabus containing links to each lesson. The tutorials include definitions, worked examples, and sample problems. "Cyber Exams" (practice tests) are also available for some topics. The site is designed to provide material to supplement a formal course, but it is also helpful for students needing a quick review of a skill from a previous course. For example, if a student is working on a topic in an advanced class (e.g., integrating rational functions in calculus), and needs help with a more basic skill (e.g., factoring from algebra), he or she can click on a link to go to the lesson needed. The reverse is also true: links are often provided so that students struggling with a topic in one course, can see how the skill will be applied later in a more advanced course (for example, a student who is learning to combine fractions in algebra, can click on a link to see how that skill relates to integrating such functions in calculus or to solving differential equations). Great care has been taken in assembling the lessons, and all equations are mathematically typeset, which makes them easier to read than equations using ASCII characters, but some pages may take a while to load over slower connections. Some courses are not yet complete, but lessons are being added all the time. The site also includes useful links to other math sites and discussion groups on the Internet.**Updated 8/10/01:
The S.O.S. Mathematics site is still going strong and definitely worth a visit! It is being updated on a regular basis.
