Summer is fast approaching and the Science NetLinks team has been hard at work. We've highlighted some timely resources that you may find useful as this school year starts to wind down.
Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common form of all cancers? And according to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is on the rise for both men and women in the United States?
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month so consider using the lesson Sunburn, Sunscreen, and Cancer in your classroom. In this lesson, students will make a connection between exposure to the sun's UV rays and the mutation of skin cells to cancer. They will also explore the benefits of sunscreen and safe exposure to the sun in order to prevent burns and premature aging of the skin.
Science Netlinks has created a new lesson called Endangered Languages that introduces students to the study of linguistics as a science. This lesson focuses on Aleut, a language native to Alaska, and Middle Chulym, a language spoken by only about 35 people in central Siberia. Students can listen to a Science Update podcast highlighting the preservation efforts of one linguist, watch film clips from a PBS documentary showcasing four endangered languages from three continents, and discuss the important link between language and culture.
Check out the SBE Project for more social, behavioral, and economic science resources to use in your classroom.
Science NetLinks Summer Science Fun
Summer is just around the corner. To keep kids excited about science and learning, Science NetLinks has gathered a collection of Summer Science Fun resources. We've pulled together a great selection of books for summer reading, found experiments kids can do with materials from around the house, and picked engaging online science resources. Kids can read about dinosaur eggs, experiment with soap bubbles, and create their own inventions.

Students will be introduced to the concept of viruses as life forms and how they are transmitted, affect body functions, and compromise the immune system.
