Share Skin Health and Safety at Your Library

Skin is the body's largest organ. It's also the most visible. A square inch of skin has millions of cells and many nerve endings for sensing temperature, pain, pressure, and touch. It keeps us sheltered from the elements and protects our insides from drying up. Yet despite its toughness, skin is sensitive and can be damaged if not cared for. It requires our protection from the sun and from irritants.

Would you like to help your community have a better understanding of skin health and care? Do you want to do more health programs at your library but lack the funds?

AAAS is requesting applications for a grant to support public libraries to host a skin health program in their communities.  There are 10 grants available so apply today!

Grant Information:

AAAS’s Skin Deep Project is a multi-year project featuring an ambitious outreach and education program aimed at students, teachers, and the general public. As part of the project, AAAS will award grants to public libraries to do skin health outreach during the fall of 2009.

  • There are 10 mini-grants available at $500 each
  • Libraries will receive print copies of the new publication, The Science Inside Skin
  • A skin care-related gift basket will be provided to use as a give-away
  • Library programs should take place in September, October, or November, 2009
  • Libraries will be asked to submit a final report about their program

It is recommended that libraries that wish to apply for these grants consider partnering with local health and community-based organizations.

Program Topics:

Libraries will develop a skin-related program around topics found in the new publication, The Science Inside Skin. This book provides extremely useful and important information that people should be aware of regarding their skin and skin health. General topic areas include:

  • Skin Health
  • Sun Exposure and Skin Cancer
  • Skin Disorders and Treatment

A pdf of the book, The Science Inside Skin, can be found online at: http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/skindeep/SI_Skin_Book.pdf

Application Review:

  • Applications will be reviewed by a panel of AAAS staff, AAAS members, and other skin health experts.
  • Selections will be made based on completion of the application and merit of the proposed activity.
  • Reviewers will take into consideration how well the proposed activity relates to topics found in the book, The Science Inside Skin. Therefore, we encourage you to read the book prior to developing the program.
  • In the interest of having a regionally balanced program, geographic location may be taken into consideration.
