Our environment is filled with all kinds of smells (we sometimes call these smells "odors" or "scents"). Some smells we like, but there are other smells we do not like. When you are near something, its odor seems stronger than if you are standing far away from it. When you move farther away from the odor, it is harder for your nose to smell it. Move near and far from an odor to experiment with how distance affects how much your nose can smell.
