Looking into Space
To successfully explore the objects in space, you need a bigger eye than the ones you have. A telescope is just such a “big eye.” By following the instructions below, you’ll make a model of a telescope and learn what real telescopes can teach you about the universe.

Make a Refracting Telescope

STEP 1
Go to the activity Find Out How a Telescope Works

STEP 2
Read through the “To Do and Notice” section and carefully examine the illustration of what your telescope will look like. Then scan “The Steps” quickly to get a general idea of how to put it together.

STEP 3
Gather the materials you will use to make your telescope and follow the assembly instructions. Ask your teacher for help if necessary.

This is it—your chance to show what you’ve learned about telescopes—and to prove you’re far out! Here’s what to do:

1. Use your telescope to read the “tele-questions” your teacher has posted on your classroom “sky.”
2. Discuss the questions with your partner or group and agree on your answers.
3. Present your answers to the class.
